Sketch a simple monthly budget

A first budget is a list of what comes in and what already has to go out. Free ChatGPT can arrange the numbers you type. You check the math, you mark the guesses, and you do not treat it as advice about loans or investments.

Steps

  1. Use totals, not a full bank download

You do not need to upload a statement. Write round numbers you are comfortable typing: take-home pay, rent, phone, groceries, and the debts you pay every month. Leave out account numbers. A typed list is enough and it is more private.

  2. Open ChatGPT

Go to ChatGPT and start a new chat on the free plan. This is not financial, tax, or credit advice. It is a sketch so you can see the shape of the month.

  3. Ask for a plan that shows its arithmetic

Replace the sample numbers with yours. If you do not know a number, write “unknown” rather than a wish.

    Prompt to paste

Make a simple monthly budget from these numbers. Show the addition.

    Take-home pay: [2400]
    Rent: [1100]
    Utilities: [160]
    Phone: [70]
    Groceries: [400]
    Transport: [120]
    Minimum debt payments: [200]
Other bills I already know: [childcare 300]

    List:
    1. Money in
    2. Bills I named
    3. What is left
    4. A cautious split of what is left for food I forgot, irregular costs, and anything I could set aside

If the bills are larger than the pay, say that plainly.
Do not tell me to take a loan.
    Do not invent income.
    Round to the nearest ten.

  4. Add it up yourself

Check money in, minus the bills, on a calculator. Chats mis-add. If your total and the chat’s total disagree, yours is the one to keep, after you check it a second time. Fix any bill you typed wrong.

  5. Mark what is a guess

Groceries and transport are often guesses. Write “guess” next to them. A budget that pretends those numbers are exact will feel like a failure in week two. Adjust them after a real month, not after a second prompt.

Tips

  • If the month does not start on the first, say so. “I get paid on the 15th and the 30th” changes when rent is safe to pay.

  • Irregular costs belong on the list: car insurance twice a year, school fees, gifts. Divide the yearly cost by 12 if you want a monthly reminder.

  • Copilot or Claude can do this arithmetic too. The calculator check does not change.

  • If the result is that bills are larger than pay, the next step is a person: a nonprofit credit counselor, a benefits office, or someone you trust. Do not ask the chat for a loan or a way to hide a debt.

Common questions

Should I upload my bank CSV?

You can on some free plans, and you do not have to. A typed list of totals avoids sharing every store you visited. If you do upload a file, delete account numbers from it first.

It told me to invest what is left.

Ignore that. This guide is a sketch of the month, not an investment plan. Reply: “Do not suggest investments or new debt. Stick to the numbers I gave you.”

The numbers are embarrassing.

Use round figures, or skip the chat and do the same four lines on paper. The categories in the prompt work with a pencil.

Is this a replacement for a budgeting app?

No. It is a first picture. If you want the picture every month, copy the categories into a note or a spreadsheet and fill them in yourself.
