Steps

  1. Pick the one detail that is actually theirs

    “Thanks for the gift” is not enough for a good note. “Thanks for the blue mug, I drink tea at my desk now” is. If you cannot remember a detail, look at the gift or the favor before you open the chat. Do not ask the chat to invent a memory.

  2. Open ChatGPT

    Go to ChatGPT and start a new chat. The free plan is enough.

  3. Ask for a short note in the right form

    Say whether this is a card, an email, or a text. A card should sound like a card.

  4. Copy it onto the card in your handwriting if you can

    A handwritten card can use the chat’s sentences. Write them yourself if the person would notice a printed insert. Change any word you would not say. Sign your name.

  5. Send it this week

    A plain note that arrives beats a perfect note that stays in the chat. Address the envelope or paste the email, and send it.

Tips

  • For a sympathy or condolence note, say who you are writing about and one true memory. Add to the prompt: “Do not say everything happens for a reason. Do not give advice.”

  • If you are thanking a group, name the group and one person only if you mean to single them out.

  • Job-interview thank-yous should mention the role and one topic you actually discussed. Do not claim you were offered the job.

  • Claude handles a sensitive note steadily. Use it with the same “do not invent a memory” line.

Yes, one at a time, each with its own detail. A batch of identical notes is obvious, and it wastes the only part the person cares about.

What if I did not like the gift?

Thank them for the gesture and the specific object without pretending it is your favorite. “Thank you for the scarf, it was kind of you to think of me” is enough. Do not ask the chat to fake delight.
