Summarize a PDF in plain English

A long PDF is easier to face when you can see the point first. This guide uses the free Gemini chat in a browser. You still check the original before you act on a date or an amount.

Steps

  1. Decide the file is okay to upload

Put the PDF somewhere you can find it, such as Downloads. If it is a medical letter, a school record, a contract, or anything marked confidential, upload it only if you are allowed to share it. Remove the password first. Gemini cannot open a locked PDF.

  2. Open Gemini and sign in

Go to Gemini and sign in with a free Google account. You do not need a paid Google AI plan for one ordinary PDF.

  3. Attach the PDF

Start a new chat. In the message box, click the plus button or Add files, then choose the PDF. Google’s help page says a free Gemini prompt can include up to 10 files, and a document can be up to 100 MB. If the upload fails, close the file in other apps and try once more.

  4. Ask for a summary you can use

Paste the prompt below and send it. Wait until the answer finishes before you type again.

    Prompt to paste

Summarize the attached PDF for someone who has not read it.

    Use these sections:
    - What this document is
    - The main points, in plain English
    - Any dates, amounts, or deadlines
    - Words I may not know, with a short meaning
    - What I should do next, only if the document says to do something

If a page looks like a photo or a scan with little text, say so. Do not guess at words you cannot read. Keep the summary shorter than the document.

  5. Make it point back to the page

Read the summary next to the PDF. For any date, amount, or instruction you might act on, send a follow-up.

    Prompt to paste

For each date, amount, and instruction in your summary, tell me where it appears in the PDF (page or section). If you cannot find it, delete that item.

  6. Keep the original

Copy the summary into your notes if you want it. Do not throw away the PDF. A summary is a map, not a replacement, for a bill, a lease, or a form you have to sign.

Tips

  • Free Gemini is enough for most household and school PDFs. A very large file, or many uploads in a short time, can hit a rolling limit. Wait and try again, or split the PDF.

  • ChatGPT’s free plan can also read a PDF. OpenAI’s help center says free accounts get only a few file uploads a day (published as 3, and sometimes fewer when the service is busy). ChatGPT reads the text and can skip pictures inside the PDF.

  • If the PDF is a fuzzy scan, ask which pages could not be read, then read those pages yourself.

  • If you do not see Add files, look for a plus sign or a paperclip. The job of the button is to attach the PDF.

Common questions

Will Gemini keep my PDF?

You are sending the file to Google. Do not upload a document you are not allowed to share. For anything serious, you can skip the upload and paste only the paragraphs you want explained.

The summary mentions something I cannot find. What now?

Ask which page it came from. If there is no page, ignore that line. This happens most often with scans and with tables.

Can I summarize two PDFs at once?

Yes. Attach both and say which is which, for example: “File A is the lease. File B is the renewal letter. Tell me what changed.”

Is this enough for a legal or medical decision?

No. Use it to understand the wording, then talk to the clinic, the school, the company, or a qualified person before you sign, pay, or ignore a deadline.
