Get started with ChatGPT: your first useful chat

ChatGPT is the chat assistant from OpenAI. This guide takes you from sign-up to one finished, checked task, with a simple pattern you can reuse for almost any request.

Steps

  1. Open ChatGPT and sign up

    Go to chatgpt.com or install the official ChatGPT app from OpenAI. Click Sign up and pick how to sign in. The free plan works for this guide.

  2. Write your first request with three parts

    Say the task, the details that matter, and the format you want. Replace the brackets.

Details: [one guest is vegetarian, we have 2 hours to cook].
Give me a shopping list and a simple timeline as bullet points.

  3. Improve it with short follow-ups

    Stay in the same chat and say what to change: "Make it cheaper," "Swap the dessert," or "Put the timeline in a table." You don't need to repeat the whole request.

  4. Use the + button for files and photos

    Click + next to the message box to attach a photo, PDF, or document, then ask about it, for example "What does this form ask me to fill in?"

  5. Find old chats in the sidebar

    Your chats are saved in the left sidebar (tap the menu icon on phones). Rename one by hovering over it and opening its menu.

  6. Check the answer

    Before you use it, check numbers, dates, prices, and anything that matters for health, money, or the law. ChatGPT can make confident mistakes.

Tips

  • The free plan uses ChatGPT's current default model with usage limits. When you hit a limit, it may switch to a smaller model or ask you to wait.

  • You can turn off 'Improve the model for everyone' under Settings > Data controls if you don't want chats used for training.

  • Starting a new chat for a new topic keeps answers focused.

Common questions

Is ChatGPT free?

Yes, with limits. Paid plans add more use and features. Plans change, so check the current plan page.

Why did the answer change when I asked again?

ChatGPT writes a new answer each time. If you like one version, copy it or ask it to keep that version.

Can it look things up online?

Yes, it can search the web for current topics. When it does, it shows sources you can click and check.
