A voice memo is only useful if you can skim it later. Free Gemini can turn a short, clear recording into text. You fix the names, and you only summarize after the words look right.

## What you need

- A free Google account
- An audio file, such as m4a, mp3, or wav, that you are allowed to transcribe
- A recording of about 10 minutes or less for the free Gemini app

## Steps

### 1. Get an audio file, not just a voice-memo app

On an iPhone, open Voice Memos, tap the recording, choose Share, and save it to Files. On Android, the recorder app usually has a share or save option. You want a file you can select. Tell the other people in the recording if they did not expect a transcript.

### 2. Trim it if it is longer than 10 minutes

Google’s help page for Gemini Apps says total audio on the free plan is about 10 minutes. Paid Google AI plans allow much longer audio. The free ChatGPT plan does not accept audio uploads at all. If your recording is a long meeting, split it into pieces or transcribe the part you actually need.

### 3. Open Gemini on a computer if you can

Go to [gemini.google.com](https://gemini.google.com) and sign in. A computer makes it easier to upload a file and to copy the transcript. A phone browser works too: tap **Add files** or the plus button and choose the audio.

### 4. Ask for a careful transcript

Attach the file first, then paste this prompt.

Prompt:

```
Transcribe the attached recording.
- Write it as paragraphs, not one long line.
- If more than one person talks, label them Speaker 1 and Speaker 2. Do not invent real names.
- Leave out um and uh.
- If a word is unclear, write [unclear] instead of guessing.
- Do not summarize yet. I want the words first.
```

### 5. Listen to one minute while you read

Play the start of the audio and follow the transcript. Fix names, street names, and medicine names yourself. Those are the words a transcript gets wrong most often. If a whole section says [unclear], the audio was too noisy there. Move the phone closer next time.

### 6. Ask for notes only after the words look right

A summary of a bad transcript repeats the mistakes. When the transcript is good enough, you can ask: “List the decisions and the tasks. If a task has no owner in the recording, write ‘owner not named.’”

## Tips

- Quiet audio matters more than a fancy tool. A recording from across a loud room will come back full of [unclear].
- Free Gemini also caps video at about 5 minutes. This guide is for audio. A video of a meeting is the wrong file type for the free limit.
- Do not upload a recording of someone who did not agree, especially a medical visit, a classroom, or a private argument. The law where you live may require consent.
- If Add files rejects the recording, check the length and the format. Export again as m4a or mp3.

## FAQ

### Can I use the free ChatGPT plan instead?

No. OpenAI’s help center says audio upload is on paid ChatGPT plans, not the free plan. Use Gemini for a short recording, or type notes from memory.

### It mixed up who said what.

Speaker labels are guesses from the sound. If you know the voices, replace Speaker 1 and Speaker 2 yourself. Do not treat the labels as proof.

### The recording is 40 minutes.

The free Gemini app is the wrong tool for the whole file. Cut out the 10 minutes you need, or use a paid plan that publishes a longer audio limit. Do not expect the free upload to accept the full meeting.

### Can I get timestamps?

You can ask, but on a noisy recording they wander. For a short voice memo, paragraphs are more useful than a timestamp on every sentence.
