Shopping research goes bad when a chat sounds sure and the price is old. Free Perplexity can compare two products and show sources. You open the sources, then you check the store.

## What you need

- The two product names, as specific as you can make them
- What you will use the thing for, and what you will not spend
- A browser. A free Perplexity account is optional

## Steps

### 1. Write down the job, not the brand story

“A vacuum for a small apartment with pet hair, under $200” is a job. “The best vacuum” is not. Note must-haves (bagless, works on stairs) and things you do not care about.

### 2. Open Perplexity

Go to [perplexity.ai](https://www.perplexity.ai). You can search without paying. The free plan includes basic searches that cite sources, plus a small allowance of more advanced Pro searches. An account saves history. You do not need Pro for a shopping comparison.

### 3. Ask for a comparison that is allowed to say “I don’t know”

Put both names in the question.

Prompt:

```
Compare [Product A] and [Product B] for [a small apartment with pet hair].
My budget is [under $200].
I care about [suction on carpet, weight, and whether bags are required].
I do not care about [smart-home features].
Make a simple comparison.
Cite a source for every spec and price.
If you cannot find a spec, write "not found" instead of guessing.
Do not declare a winner. Tell me which differences matter for the job I described.
```

### 4. Open two citations

Click through. A citation that is a forum rumor is weaker than the maker’s spec page or a recent review from a site you recognize. If a cited page does not say what the answer claimed, ignore that line.

### 5. Check the price where you would actually buy it

Prices move. The chat’s number can be days or months old. Look at the store page before you add anything to a cart. Shipping and a warranty can matter more than a $10 difference.

### 6. Decide from your list, not from the chat’s enthusiasm

If you needed it to be light and one of them is heavy, that is the decision. You do not need the chat to bless it.

## Tips

- Use full model names. “The blue Dyson” is not a model. The number on the box is.
- Microsoft Copilot’s free chat at copilot.microsoft.com can also answer from the web. Perplexity is in this guide because the citations are the point.
- Ask “what do owners complain about after six months?” and then open those sources too. A spec sheet will not mention a latch that breaks.
- This is not a safety certification. For a car seat, a helmet, or anything that plugs in near water, use the manufacturer and the recall list, not a chat summary.

## FAQ

### It told me one of them is the best.

Ignore the trophy. Read the rows that match what you said you care about. You can reply: “Remove the winner. Leave the table.”

### The two products are from a private Facebook listing.

A chat cannot see that listing. Paste the descriptions yourself, and still meet in a public place and check the item. Do not pay a stranger because a chat said the price was fair.

### Can it see today’s price?

Sometimes it can fetch a page, and sometimes that page is cached or wrong. The store you will buy from is the price that counts.

### Do I need a paid Perplexity plan?

No. A basic cited search is a free-plan task. If the site asks you to upgrade, simplify the question and try once more later rather than paying for one comparison.
